Police Warn Against Fraudulent Locksmiths in Perth (How to Find a Licensed Locksmith)

Recent investigations by WA Police licensing services officers have unveiled a concerning trend of potentially unlicensed locksmiths in Perth advertising their services through various online platforms. A focused operation has led to charges against two individuals found conducting unlicensed locksmithing work across multiple locations in Western Australia.

In Fremantle, officers executed a search warrant at the residence of a 26-year-old man. It is alleged that this individual responded to service requests and carried out locksmithing work at properties in Doubleview, Clarkson, Beaconsfield, Floreat, Rivervale, Fremantle, and East Victoria Park without holding the necessary license. The man reportedly charged between $186 and $582 for these unlicensed services. Consequently, he has been charged with seven counts of operating as an unlicensed security installer appeared in Magistrates court last year.

The investigation is ongoing, with authorities examining other individuals potentially linked to a website promoting these unlicensed services.

In light of these findings, WA Police, in collaboration with the Master Locksmiths Association of Australasia (MLAA), are urging home and business owners to engage only licensed locksmiths to ensure optimal security. Licensed locksmiths undergo rigorous security checks and continuous monitoring by WA Police, ensuring their reliability and competence.

To safeguard against unlicensed operators, WA Police and the MLAA recommend several steps:

  1. When booking online, verify that the company holds an agent’s licence and that the attending locksmith has a security installer’s licence in WA.
  2. Refer to the regularly updated list of licensed agents and security installers on the WA Police website.
  3. Upon the locksmith’s arrival, request to see their security installer’s licence and security agent’s licence.

Matt Graham, WA director of the MLAA, emphasized that using a licensed locksmith not only ensures trustworthiness and security but also guarantees that the operator is properly qualified and experienced. He highlighted the rigorous requirements for becoming a licensed locksmith in Western Australia, including a four-year apprenticeship and comprehensive security vetting by WA Police.

In conclusion, the recent charges against unlicensed locksmiths underscore the importance of verifying the credentials of individuals offering security services. Engaging licensed professionals is crucial for ensuring the safety and security of homes and businesses.
