Despite its high incidence rate, there is limited Australian research investigating burglary and the factors that influence it. This study is the first to examine the motivations of active burglars through in-depth interviews with detainees who were convicted of burglary. It provides insights into their planning, disposal and decision-making processes. The findings can be used to design more comprehensive crime-reduction strategies.
Historically, the vast majority of Australians have been able to rely on car and home insurance in the event of a burglary or break-in. However, this protection is not without its limitations. In fact, a recent survey revealed that over 45% of Australians who were victims of theft did not make an insurance claim or their claims weren’t accepted.

This may be a reflection of the current cost-of-living pressures on Australian consumers.
In addition to this, the study found that there was a higher rate of burglary in January, possibly due to people returning from holidays and re-establishing their routines. It was also interesting to note that more burglaries were committed in residential suburbs than in commercial areas.
